How do you help employees who are long-term sick to return to work?
Long-term illness often has a major impact on both employees and companies. Flemish employers are increasingly faced with the challenge of successfully reintegrating employees after a long absence. This requires a well thought-out policy that not only makes the return go smoothly, but also strengthens the well-being and commitment of all employees. An effective reintegration policy is therefore crucial for a healthy and productive workplace.
Customised approach
Employees who have been off sick in the long term often need extra support to return to work. Acerta’s research shows that more than two-thirds of companies rehire employees after a period of illness. Usually, these workers are reintegrated step by step into their old jobs, which helps their recovery and increases the chances of a successful return.
However, some employees may thrive better in a new role within the company. In 18% of cases, employers offer an alternative position tailored to the capabilities of the recovering employee.
Miet Vanhegen, Manager of Career Transition at Acerta Consult, stresses the importance of customisation: “Work is often a particularly helpful step in the recovery process. In that case, allowing employees to resume work gradually, or a phased return to work, proves to be more beneficial than waiting until someone is fully recovered. ‘Customised’ is the key to smooth reintegration. Effective reintegration requires commitment and flexibility from both employer and employee.”
A solid reintegration policy as employer branding
Reintegration is not only important for the returning employee, but also for the whole team. Employees find it increasingly important that their workplace pays attention to their health and well-being. Companies that actively work to properly reintegrate colleagues after long-term absence are seen as caring and committed employers. This makes them more attractive to current and new employees.
Government support for reintegration
The federal government supports employers in reintegrating employees who have been long-term sick. One of the measures is the Work Resumption Premium worth € 1,725, which encourages companies to offer part-time employment to employees who have been incapacitated for work for at least a year, or allow these employees to progressively return to work. This provides a financial incentive and helps companies bridge the gap between sickness and work, benefiting both employee and employer. The Flemish government also provides some employment support measures, such as Individual Customisation (Individueel Maatwerk, or IMW).
A win-win for everyone
A good reintegration policy is crucial for every employer. It not only promotes the recovery of employees who have been off long-term sick, but also strengthens the working climate and employer image. With the right approach and government support, reintegration can be a win-win for everyone.
